University of Surrey

Micro-and Nano-Materials and Technologies’ Industrial Doctorate Centre

Surrey is home to two of only nineteen IDCs in the UK- ‘Micro-and Nano-Materials and Technologies’ (MiNMat) and ‘Sustainability for Engineering & Energy Systems’ (SEES).

The MiNMat IDC provides a supportive and engaging environment for students to carry out challenging Engineering Doctorate (EngD) research projects The IDC also provides a framework for high quality collaboration between academics and industry sponsors.

The core of the Micro- and NanoMaterials and Technologies (MiNMaT) IDC lies in:

  • The solution of academically challenging and industrially relevant problems
  • The processing - microstructure - property relationships which are the cornerstones of the discipline
  • The unique focus on characterisation, including hands-on experience and use of state-of-the-art instrumentation

The EngD programme is funded principally by the Engineering & Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), the University of Surrey and by our sponsoring organisations.

Undertaken as a partnership between industry and academia, each EngD research project is designed around the sponsoring organisation’s research priorities. We encourage both private and public sector organisations, of any size, to become a sponsor.

The research element of the programme is unique to each Research Engineer. It will tackle an industrially relevant research problem (or problems) and incorporate a significant degree of advanced characterisation. The majority of the research element will be undertaken at the sponsor's premises.

One of the key distinguishing features of the EngD is the programme of courses. These are designed with two aims in mind; to develop specialist scientific/technical knowledge and to provide professional development in non scientific areas such as project management and communications skills. There are mandatory and elective courses, all normally a week in duration. Courses must be passed in order to proceed to the next level of the programme.

Each Research Engineer has a supervisory/support team. The team comprises a sponsor based supervisor, an academic supervisor(s) and a support network based in the IDC at the University by way of the IDC Director and Centre Manager.
