University of Leeds

School of Mechanical Engineering

The School of Mechanical Engineering is one of the leading mechanical engineering departments in the UK and a leader in the field internationally. In the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise we achieved an impressive 75% of research activity rated internationally excellent or world leading, placing the School in the top 5 in the UK.

As well as confirming the School's status as one of the foremost research and learning centres for mechanical engineering, these high ratings enable us to attract funding to invest further in our research and facilities and to help us attract the best staff and students. This wealth of expertise and investment ensures that you receive the best quality of education.

FIRST CLASS FACILITIES

The School has excellent computational facilities with a forty-station CAD suite, a number of high performance workstations for analytical studies and access to the Leeds High Performance Computer and the White Rose Grid network for particularly intensive computer simulation, computational fluid dynamics and solid modelling. This state-of-the art equipment is supported with well equipped laboratories staffed by highly trained technical and IT support staff, excellent manufacturing and measurement facilities and an extensive network of PC's.

Formula Student Race Car

The Formula SAE International and Formula Student Race Team are annual competitions based in America and Europe where students design, build, test and race an open wheeled, single seater race car. Typically cars designed at Leeds may do 0-60 mph in just over 3 seconds with the engine revving at close to 14000 rpm!

You can become involved in this initiative through projects linked to your course. These projects provide you with the opportunity to work as part of a dynamic team that has to design a new vehicle from scratch in just nine months. Projects range from vehicle dynamics and suspension design through to engine management and development. If you would like to know more visit our Formula student race team's website.

All our MSc courses provide an excellent base from which to pursue a PhD.
