School of Civil Engineering
Research in the School of Civil Engineering is organised within two institutes:
Institute of Resilient Infrastructure (iRI), which specialises in structural design; characterisation and application of smart materials, low carbon materials, recycled and reused materials; sustainable use of materials; environmental geotechnics; and construction processes.
Pathogen Control Engineering Institute (PaCE), which specialises in water supply and sanitation in developing countries; aerobiology and infection control; solid waste management; Water and wastewater engineering; and Contaminated land and ground water.
School of Computing
Research in the School of Computing is organised within two Institutes:
Institute for Artificial Intelligence and Biological Systems, which includes research in Biosystems, Computer Vision; Medical Imaging; Knowledge, Representation and Reasoning; Natural Language Processing, Scheduling and Constraints.
Institute for Computational and Systems Sciences, which includes research in Algorithms and Complexity, Distributed Systems and Services, Scientific Computation, Visualization and Virtual Reality, Web Science.
School of Electronic & Electrical Engineering
Research in the School of Electronic & Electrical Engineering is organised within two Institutes:
Institute of Microwaves and Photonics (IMP) which specialises in the broad areas of high frequency electronics and nanotechnology.
Institute of Integrated Information Systems (IIIS) which specialises in most aspects of wireless communication, communication networks, signal processing, optical networks, radio propagation, instrumentation and positioning.
School of Mechanical Engineering
Research in the School is organised within three institutes:
Institute of Engineering Systems and Design which includes research in next generation healthcare devices; energy efficient vehicles; affective engineering design; and design systems.
Institute of Engineering Thermofluids, Surfaces and Interfaces which includes research in combustion; thin films; tribology; corrosion; engineering optics/metrology; biomimetics; and spray dynamics.
Institute of Medical and Biological Engineering which includes research in joint replacement; tissue re-engineering; cardiac imaging and modelling; cartilage tissue substitution; and spine biomechanics.
School of Process, Environmental and Materials Engineering
Research in the School of Process, Environmental and Material Engineering is organised within three institutes:
Energy and Resources Research Institute, which specialises in combustion; energy; future fuels; and aviation;
Institute for Materials Research, which specialises in carbon; electroceramics; novel alloys & steels; photonics; and textile structures.
Institute of Particle Science and Engineering, which specialises in chemical engineering and mineral process engineering.
