Leeds Metropolitan University
School of the Built Environment

The School of the Built Environment's students and staff are based at Northern Terrace, Civic Quarter where the facilities are designed to support the learning experience. Taught and research opportunities are available.
Built Environment is home to a wide range of disciplines, each one geared to the study of the how building and infrastructure projects are developed and managed. This area of study represents a key element of the UK and international economies and one that provides a challenging and interesting career choice embracing people, society and the creation of a sustainable living environment. The Built Environment subject groups provide a relevant and challenging range of studies which are in keeping with the demands of today's industry.
We aim to provide education and training for students across a range of specialities, which will enable them to participate fully in the management of a sustainable built environment. The importance of multi-disciplinary working is evident across the Subject Groups and the curriculum, emphasising the industry's focus upon effective team working and the use of innovation. We feel that this approach makes our graduates more employable and valuable to society.
All of our teaching takes place in Civic Quarter, which is close to Leeds city centre. Built Environment courses are based in Northern Terrace, which includes laboratory facilities and state of the art teaching space.

Staff have significant professional and educational experience, which provides a high quality learning and teaching environment. In particular, our curriculum is flexible and able to meet the needs of both full-time and part-time students.
Colleagues have achieved national and international recognition for research and consultancy and their experience offers opportunities for students to progress to higher level studies by research. There is also a wide and exciting range of short courses aiding professional development. This activity is set in the context of growing international partnership activities, including management skills development and engineering in Hong Kong, Tanzania and Mauritius, our association with the International Facilities Management Association and cutting edge research involving water sanitation in Malawi.
There has been substantial investment into a range of research and knowledge transfer projects, which attract significant industrial interest. Our specialist areas include the study of low carbon housing, project management, company performance development and planning policy and are arranged into four research centres. We believe this activity to be critical to how we support the learning experience of our students and contribute to process and knowledge improvement within the industry.
