Construction Law & Dispute Resolution - MSc
(Distance learning)
The course is intended for professionals in construction, law and related fields who wish to develop their expertise in construction law and dispute resolution, for either practical or academic purposes. Teaching is delivered online by distance learning supported by 10 full-day optional workshops over the duration of the course. Tutors include a range of experienced arbitrators, adjudicators and specialist lawyers.
Students will need a computer with access to the internet, including the Leeds Metropolitan University website and its Virtual Learning Environment, along with the facility to open and read the common Microsoft Office applications. Use of Skype (downloadable free from the internet) and a webcam may also prove beneficial.
The structure and content of the course are designed to satisfy the examination requirements of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators through to Fellowship level for both their Adjudication and Arbitration Pathways. Modules include: Construction Law Principles; Arbitration: Law, Practice and Award Writing; Adjudication: Law, Practice and Decision Writing; Law and Practice of Claims; Commercial Mediation and Research Methods and Dissertation.
There is also a foundation module in Contract, Tort and Evidence for those candidates who are unable to demonstrate sufficient working knowledge in these areas of law to allow them properly to benefit from the MSc modules.
A variety of assessment methods are used to test your knowledge acquisition, conceptual understanding and skill development. Module coursework and examination are supplemented by presentations, debates and group-work activities.
Entry requirements:
You should normally have a good UK honours degree in a relevant discipline or an equivalent professional qualification. Candidates who lack the normal entry qualifications but who possess acceptable alternative qualifications and/or records of achievement, along with appropriate experience will also be considered. All candidates are required to have a foundational knowledge of English legal principles, contract and tort.
