Leeds Metropolitan University
Civil Engineering
(Part-time)

This course is particularly suitable for holders of BSc and BEng qualifications in Civil Engineering. It addresses both management and technical skills and develops a range of competencies identified as being essential for prospective Chartered Engineers. The course is also appropriate for practicing civil engineers at all levels who wish to further develop their skills, particularly in management and law-related areas.
The course aims to be intellectually challenging, to enhance students' abilities in the evaluation of appropriate decision-making strategies and to develop research capability. This will enable students to analyse and resolve problems in their professional context.
Students are assessed on the development of a range of technical knowledge and management skills, together with the ability to select and apply them and reflect on the outcome in simulated and real life professional projects and problems. In addition, in preparation for working in multi-disciplinary industries operating in complex environments, students need to develop a wide range of key skills. These will be developed within the modular curriculum to enable development in a professional context.
The underlying philosophy of the course is that of applied learning and the stimulation of critical thought. This will be evident in the approaches to teaching and learning and the assessment of learning outcomes.
The course is structured so that management, procedural and professional skills are developed in the first year. This approach allows students to understand and apply the technical knowledge, studied in the later stages of the course, in an appropriately reflective and professionally orientated context.
Entry requirements:
You should normally have a relevant honours degree, a relevant diploma in higher education plus appropriate work experience, or a relevant professional qualification. Mature candidates who can demonstrate appropriate previous experiential learning will also be considered.
