The University of Northampton
Non-Destructive Testing - top-up (BSc Hons)
Location: Distance learning
Attendance: This is a distance learning course allowing the student to study from home or work. There are weekend schools each year. Minimal access to the internet needed.
Course run by: School of Science and Technology
Course Summary
The aim of the course is to allow people already working in the Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) industries who have completed the FdSc NDT (or equivalent) to continue study by distance learning at a higher level.
Course Aims
The subjects covered build upon the ideas explored during the FdSc to increase knowledge and skills which will complement the students’ current job and increase career prospects.
Special Course Features
- Distance learning
- Modular
- The course is closely linked to the Personal Certification of Non-Destructive Testing (PCN) through the British Institute of Nondestructive Testing (BINDT).
Course Content
Because the course is both modular and taught by distance learning, study is very flexible. You can study full-time or part-time and choose which modules to study at each stage. A module could also be taken as a ‘one-off’, either as a taster before deciding whether or not to do other modules or in order to update skills in that particular area. For the honours degree, some modules are compulsory, including the project, while others can be chosen from a range of options.
Stage three
This stage teaches advanced NDT techniques such as corrosion analysis, thermographic imaging, radar and microwave testing, condition monitoring and acoustic emission. A double module project is carried out in which the student carries out an individual project which is usually related to their work.
Typical modules include
- Advanced ultrasonic techniques
- Corrosion monitoring
- Thermal imaging
- Vibration monitoring
Career Opportunities
The course is designed for people who are already working in the NDT industries who want to gain qualifications to help progress their careers.
Assessment
Modules are assessed by coursework.
Entry Requirements
Applicants will be expected to have successfully completed the FdSc Non-Destructive Testing or have an equivalent qualification.
