Course Content
It is assumed that students would have some knowledge of computers and networks. If not, however, there is a bridging module that will have to be taken prior to starting on the MSc. The modules are delivered over six-week blocks, finishing with an assignment. The year is divided into three semesters, and each semester is further divided in half. So, for example, full-time study could be split as follows:
- Semester 1a - Internet Systems; Internet Programming; Internet Publishing
- Semester 1b - Databases; Graphics Programming; Client Side Software
- Semester 2a - Server Side Software; Web Design; Internet Security I
- Semester 2b - System Integration; Internet Media; Internet Security II
- Semester 3 - Research Methods and Dissertation.
All modules are worth 10M Level CATs points, except for the Dissertation which is worth 50M Level points. The Dissertation gives the student a chance to apply the knowledge which they have gained during the rest of their study, allowing them to manage the development of a substantial piece of work.
If you have passed a total of six modules and therefore gained a minimum of 60 CATs points, but decide to terminate your studies early, you can be recommended for the award of a Postgraduate Certificate. If you have passed a total of 12 modules and therefore gained a minimum of 120 CATs points, but decide to terminate your studies early, you can be recommended for the award of a Postgraduate Diploma. To be recommended for the award of MSc, you must pass all of modules including the Research Methods and Dissertation ie. have 180 CATs points.
