UCAS Code: N320
Course Length: 1 year full-time
Number of Places: 20
Entry requirements
The normal entry requirement for a Master's degree is an Honours degree or equivalent qualification in electronic engineering or related disciplines.
Other qualifications and/or experience that demonstrate appropriate knowledge and skills at Honours degree standard may also be acceptable.
The normal entry requirement for the Postgraduate Diploma course is a degree or equivalent qualification. A lower level qualification together with appropriate experience or, exceptionally, substantial industrial experience alone may also be acceptable.
Introduction
This course focuses on the fast-growing and challenging area of embedded systems, a rapidly expanding area of modern technology. Its impact and potential are increasingly evident in devices used in commerce and industry. There are expanding applications with enhanced features for end users in industry, instrumentation, health care, entertainment, science and robotics.
This advanced programme offers a progression route for graduates in electrical and electronic engineering, control systems, computer science or related disciplines and knowledge of immediate relevance to industry. It is also suitable for more experienced engineers, who require a postgraduate programme to enhance their technical and managerial education. The industrial relevance of the course is of prime importance; it offers flexibility in the subjects studied whilst retaining coherence.
You are able to select options in technical and management subjects and also select Master's level modules from other postgraduate schemes within Computing and Engineering, provided that the module outcomes are relevant.
Course Structure
You may complete the course in one year by full-time attendance. In exceptional circumstances we can extend it over a period of part-time study to suit students and their employers.
Core modules:
- Embedded Systems
- Embedded Controllers
Option modules:
- Digital Design (recommended)
- Virtual Instrumentation (recommended)
- Parallel Computer Architectures, Computer Clusters
- Project Management (recommended)
- Software Development Methods
- Research Project
- Random Signal Analysis
- Total Quality Engineering
- Personal Development
- Human Computer Interaction
Teaching and Assessment
Through structured lectures, tutorials and practical lab-based sessions, you will work in modern embedded system labs, equipped with the latest development tools and software packages and an electronics lab for manufacturing boards with surface mount components. Student centred delivery allows you greater control of your learning through online learning resources. Assessment is through a mix of examinations, reports on laboratory experiments, laboratory-based assignments and projects.
Career Opportunities
Career opportunities for embedded systems engineers are numerous and are rapidly expanding into a variety of large and small organisations. Our graduates are equipped with theoretical knowledge and practical design skills to open up new career opportunities and be valuable assets to their employers.
Remember
The focal point of the course is the fast growing and challenging area of embedded systems: its impact and potential are increasingly evident in devices used in commerce.
