Manufacturing with Integrated Studies

Start: Throughout the year.

Duration: 3½ to 4 years full-time.

Entry Requirements:

Candidates must possess, or be expected to achieve, a 1st or 2nd class UK Honours degree or equivalent in a relevant discipline. Other relevant qualifications, together with significant experience, may be considered.

Course Description:

First year

Students register initially for the degree of MPhil/PhD. During the first six to nine months they attend a programme of taught modules and complete a group project.  Students take eight one-week taught modules - three core and five specialist – selected from a large range (details available on request), covering a variety of manufacturing topics.

On successful completion of these modules, students continue with the rest of the programme. They develop their initial research idea in the first year, complete the initial literature review, plan the programme of work and carry out preliminary investigations.

Following the assessment at the end of the first year, students make the decision whether to formally change registration to PhD. As a doctoral researcher, students work in an exciting and industrially-oriented research environment. Students are either involved in mainstream industrial research programmes or in investigating basic scientific ideas that enable future developments to occur.

Second year

Students work full-time on the research project with regular assessment. During this assessment they are required to demonstrate a high level of initiative and original thought to develop and carry out the in-depth research as well as understand the broad context in which the work is undertaken.

Third and subsequent half year

Completion of the research programme occurs in the first six months of the third year. This leaves a year to write up work, submit a thesis and defend it in an oral examination. The PhD will be awarded for the thesis, but students are expected to demonstrate the value and applicability of their findings to their subject area during the oral exam
