Course Description:
The foundation of the PhD programme is our renowned research methodology course. Applicants should position their research topic within the School’s core research areas.
"Cranfield offers an outstanding environment for those who want to engage with the real world of management practice rather than withdraw to the comforts of an academic ivory tower. At Cranfield, you will become an entrepreneur responsible for developing your own research agenda. This allows you to shape your own career and to pursue opportunities that interest you." Andreas Birnik - PhD Graduate
Modules:
In their first year, full-time students complete an MRes degree course, comprising the research methodology course and four further, assessed, modules:
- Essential Organisational Theory
- Quantitative Methods
- Learning and Teaching
- A thesis based on Systematic Review
A key tool for management researchers in producing a comprehensive and scholarly literature review, Systematic Review has been successfully transferred to the management field through the pioneering work of faculty within the School.
Part-time students complete one module of the MRes - the Research Methodology Course – and are required to attend on Mondays during the first year of study.
After the first year, students continue to work closely with their supervisor in developing their research topic through a structured programme of panel reviews.
All PhD students must complete a thesis that demonstrates an original contribution to knowledge. Examination is based on the submitted thesis and its defence at a viva voce.
