Cranfield University

Land and Water Management with Integrated Studies

Start: Throughout the year.

Duration: 3½ years full-time.

Entry Requirements:

Candidates must possess, or be expected to achieve, a 1st or 2nd class UK Honours degree or equivalent in a relevant discipline. Other relevant qualifications, together with significant experience, may be considered.

Course Description:

First year

  • Students register initially for the degree of MPhil/PhD. During the first six months they attend a programme of taught modules and undertake an individual research review.
  • Students are required to pass the assessment of these modules in order to continue with the rest of the programme. Successful completion of the taught component can result in the additional award of either a PgDip or a PgCert depending on the number of credit points accumulated.
  • During this time they also develop their initial research idea. Towards the end of the first year the initial literature review will be completed, the programme of work planned and preliminary investigations carried out.
  • Following their assessment at the end of the first year, students make the decision whether to change registration to PhD.

Second year

  • Students work full-time on the research project with regular assessment. During this assessment they are required to demonstrate a high level of initiative and original thought to develop and carry out the in-depth research as well as understand the broad context in which the work is undertaken.
  • Third and subsequent half year
  • Students complete their research programme in the first six months of the third year. This leaves a year to write up work, submit a thesis and defend it in an oral examination. The PhD will be awarded for the thesis, but students are expected to demonstrate the value and applicability of their findings to their subject area during the oral examination.
  • Depending on students’ specific interests or those of their sponsor, it may be possible to take other modules from our MSc programmes. Students may seek exemption from one or more modules on the basis of prior accredited learning, in which case another module from one of our other MSc programmes can be selected as an alternative.
  • Specialist programmes can be developed should students wish to use specific techniques as a basis for their research, eg remote sensing and geographical information systems.
