Advanced Computing Environments and Applications

Duration: 1 year full-time, 2 years part-time.
Entry Requirements:
Typically a 1st or 2nd class UK Honours degree or equivalent in computer science and engineering, information technology, communication, networks, or a related discipline. Other qualifications (e.g. HND or alternative) may be acceptable, provided that there is evidence of sufficient relevant work experience.
Course Description:
The Advanced Computing Environments and Applications option focuses on the computing infrastructure supporting the rapidly expanding Cloud and grid computing sectors.
It equips students with software engineering and analytic skills required to work with high-performance computing facilities, large data archives, remote sensing instruments and digital libraries, enabling them to work successfully within the grid and Cloud computing industry sector, anywhere in the world.
Students benefit from state-of-the-art specialist equipment, including cloud and Globus platforms, Condor, Grid engine and MPI/PVM and HPC. Courses include Grid and Web Service technologies.
Individual research thesis
With the experience and knowledge gained within the modules, students are equipped for the MSc research thesis undertaken in the second half of the academic year.
Recent thesis topics have included:
- performance measurement and analysis of enterprise grids
- storage service and resource broker service in a grid environment
- grid enabled rendering
- content based intelligent grid data management
- access and sharing of distributed spatial database in a grid environment with OGSA-DAI.

Funding:
Bursary support to cover UK/EU fees only is available to full-time UK students with a 1st class Honours degree in a relevant and appropriate discipline from a UK university.
