Housing, Regeneration & Urban Management - MA

Overview:

This innovative course combines the study of housing, regeneration and urban management issues and supports inter-professional learning through studying with staff and students from other professions.

Designed for practitioners from the housing and urban management field, and geography, planning, social policy and housing graduates, this course is suitable for those who wish to advance their skills and knowledge to develop their career within the field.

The course addresses contemporary policy issues of place-shaping, sustainability and wellbeing and provides you with the practical know-how, and sharp evaluation and decision making skills to respond to current urban challenges. On completion career advancement will be possible within in local authorities, development agencies, housing associations, voluntary sector organisations and enterprise partnerships.

You will also take part in work-based projects where you will have the opportunity to reflect and practice your professional expertise. This will support your development and career prospects as you will gain practical experience of using new techniques and methods of working.

Modules:

Core modules include:

  • Dissertation
    This is a double module that develops and enhances your research skills and capacity to conceptualise and theorise in an area of housing policy or urban management of your choice. It serves as a key mechanism for you to develop specialist knowledge and skills through the design and execution of a research strategy.
  • Housing & Urban Regeneration Policy
    Provides an overview of the key issues faced by policy makers in urban management. It explores the interdependence of social, economic and environmental issues and takes a critical approach to understanding strategies for tackling urban disparity at local levels.
  • Managing Urban Spaces
    Provides an opportunity to explore how agencies operate within governance frameworks with reference to decision-making theories. It studies the operation of power and policy implementation at local political scales.
  • Theoretical Concepts
    Develops your critical awareness of the contemporary dynamics of places and communities seen from a range of theoretical viewpoints. It aims to understand urban change and social transformation and explores and debates conceptual frameworks in social policy.
  • Urban Futures Project
    Aims to develop broad real-world and academic research skills in the demanding and fast-changing field of urban management, enabling you to devise your own independent learning contract to further your understanding and practice-based skills.

Entry requirements:

Applicants should have an honours degree or equivalent in housing, regeneration or geography, or a minimum 2:1 if in an unrelated subject. Applicants with an ordinary degree must have 2 years relevant work experience. Appropriate professional qualifications of the Chartered Institute of Housing are also accepted. Applicants being considered with no prior certificated learning will be required to demonstrate knowledge and competencies which have been gained from past professional and personal experience.
