Games Design - PG DIP

About Your Course

The games industry is one of today's most dynamic and fast-moving creative sectors. To be successful, the games designer must be skilled in the creative use of emerging technology. On this course you will develop a thorough knowledge of the theory and background of game play, 3D animation skills, and be able to develop your ideas within interactive environments. You will also work alongside colleagues from other courses in collaborative interdisciplinary groups. The main focus will be the evaluation and developmental skills from which you can analyse, deconstruct and create game-play at an industry level. This will be supported by the practical skills of 3D computer technologies, which investigate recent and emerging 3D computer modelling, animation, visualisation and rendering techniques. Models created here can then be prototyped using a range of interactive environment tools including programmable/scriptable VR applications for the control and generation of content within interactive 3D authoring systems.

Benefits of studying this course

The course offers a unique combination of technical innovation and visual creativity. Taught by a skilled group of artists, designers and technologists, we pride ourselves on the diversity of our delivery. Currently our tutors include Digital Artists, Character Designers, Visual Effects and Compositing Experts who have worked with some of the most important animation, games and visual effects companies in the world including Digital Domain and Rockstar. We have excellent equipment and resources including a state-of-the-art motion capture suite. The course is based around a final practical project presented as a showcase/tradeshow style event at the prestigious Northern Technology Institute (rated in the top 10 best UK co-working spaces).

Core Modules

3D Computer Technologies

Investigate recent and emerging 3D computer modelling, animation, visualisation, and rendering techniques. Using both analytical and creative approaches determine the best strategy to generate given objects, motion types, lighting conditions and moods.

Collaborative Practice

Exposes the student to a high-level multi-disciplinary collaborative working environment and enables them to develop their skill in complex brief-fulfilment in a collaborative environment.

Creative Industries Context

The course may include this module, which gives you a balanced and critical view of the state of the creative industries. You will explore current creative and technological limitations and become involved in forecasting future changes and developments.

Game Play

This module aims to equip students with evaluation and developmental skills from which they can analyse, deconstruct and create game play at an industry level.

Interactive Environments

Use novel methods of computer interaction for the control and generation of content for virtual computer environments and develop interaction design skills.

Requirements

In addition to the scheme entry requirements, you will require either:

  • A first degree in a media / arts related subject with evidence of a substantial technological component;
  • Or in a technological subject with evidence of creative ability;
  • Or a relevant professional qualification with supporting evidence of appropriate work through a professional portfolio.

Applications are encouraged from people who do not possess any of these formal qualifications but who have the ability, knowledge and intellectual ability to benefit from the scheme.
