About Your Course
Technological innovation has redefined how films are made and the way special effects are created to the point where the only limitation is your imagination. This course will allow you to develop your specialist skills and knowledge of digital technology, through the use of new digital tools. You will produce professional quality products, working on production and post-production special effects using state-of-the-art digital tools and solutions. You will have the opportunity to build and develop your existing portfolio of work to help you break into this innovative industry. The main focus will be investigating current technologies in video, post-production and special effects including advanced video editing techniques, compositing, blue screen/chroma-key technologies and motion graphics. You will also develop a practical understanding of recent and emerging 3D computer modelling, animation, visualisation and rendering techniques and will be encouraged to critically evaluate the relationships between sound, music and image.

Currently our tutors include digital artists, visual effects and compositing experts who have between them worked with some of the most important animation, games and visual effects companies in the world including Digital Domain and Rockstar. We have excellent resources including a state-of-the-art chroma-key and motion capture suite. The course is based around a final practical project presented as a showcase/tradeshow style event at the prestigious Northern Technology Institute (rated in the top 10 best UK co-working spaces).
Core Modules
3D Computer Technologies
Investigate recent and emerging 3D computer modelling, animation, visualisation, and rendering techniques. Using both analytical and creative approaches determine the best strategy to generate given objects, motion types, lighting conditions and moods.
Collaborative Practice
Exposes the student to a high-level multi-disciplinary collaborative working environment and enables them to develop their skill in complex brief-fulfilment in a collaborative environment.
Creative Industries Context
The course may include this module, which gives you a balanced and critical view of the state of the creative industries. You will explore current creative and technological limitations and become involved in forecasting future changes and developments.
Sound, Music and Image
This module will enable you to critically evaluate the relationships between sound, music and image and to devise and create examples of audio-visual media to a professional standard.
Video, Post Production, & Visual Effects
Develop a portfolio of unique video content & techniques to a professional standard using current technologies in Video, Post-production and Visual Effects Compositing.
Requirements
In addition to the scheme entry requirements, you will require either:
- A first degree in a media / arts related subject with evidence of a substantial technological component;
- Or in a technological subject with evidence of creative ability;
- Or a relevant professional qualification with supporting evidence of appropriate work through a professional portfolio.
Applications are encouraged from people who do not possess any of these formal qualifications but who have the ability, knowledge and intellectual ability to benefit from the scheme.
