Planning Buildings for Health

The Medical Architecture Research Unit (MARU) with the Department of The Built Environment at LSBU offer these part and full-time multidisciplinary courses. These courses are appropriate for UK and international design and construction professionals, Trusts or companies who are involved in, or wish to be involved in, the planning, design and construction or management of development of buildings for health care delivery.

These courses have been developed to provide you with the relevant skills to develop a high quality estate including:

  • Capital planning with business case procedures
  • Project briefing tools for new patient pathways
  • Buildings-in-use evaluation techniques
  • Project leadership and knowledge management
  • Environmental performance specification
  • Low carbon sustainable development approaches
  • Customer focus and inclusive therapeutic design

Established for over 35 years, MARU with the Department of The Built Environment is an educational and research centre of excellence for validated, interprofessional training focused on the spectrum of healthcare provision from hospital to home. Students benefit from being part of an extensive UK and international alumni, professional learning support network, and the use of a unique health buildings resource library.

Professional and industry links

The integrated course provides flexible Masters modules for Project Directors, Project Managers, Engineering, Design and Planning Leaders. The MSc course is accredited by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors.

The course is supported by the Department of Health Estates and Facilities for the NHS, Health Estates Facilities Management Association (HEFMA), Royal Institute of British Architects, Architects for Health, Association of Project Managers and Construction Knowledge Exchange.

Entry requirements

Students are working within a wide variety of professions, including: health service managers, clinical planners, nurses, doctors, architects, designers, engineers, contractors, quantity surveyors, equipment planners and project managers.
