Civil Engineering and Construction Management

You can start this course in January 2011, and you can study full time or part time.

  • This programme provides you with the opportunity to explore your potential within the fields of Civil Engineering or Construction Management
  • You'll focus on the management disciplines that have developed in order to address increasingly complex contracts, whether they are locally based private and public partnerships, or major international overseas projects.
  • You can choose the pathway you'll study through optional modules, so you'll either be awarded an MSc Civil Engineering and Construction Management, or MSc Construction Project Management

About the course

There are two pathways on this course Civil Engineering and Construction and Construction Project Management

MSc Civil Engineering and Construction Pathway

You'll develop transferable skills of scholarly writing, research, critical thinking, independent learning, communication, technical and problem solving, enabling you to engage with continued professional development and further advanced study in the disciplines of civil engineering and construction management.

You'll study modules of keen interest to both civil engineering and construction professionals, including flood risk engineering management, planning legislation and sustainable development and environmental performance management. The combination of core and optional modules enables you to tailor your studies to address topics important in successfully achieving and maintaining sustainable built environments, whether they are significant property developments or infrastructure projects including highways and railways.

What you'll cover

This course is made up of three stages - Postgraduate Certificate, Postgraduate Diploma and Masters.

If you study full time you'll take:

Postgraduate Certificate

  • Research Methods: Data Collection and Analysis (Online/distance learning module)
  • Project Planning and Risk Management
  • Value Engineering, Procurement and Cost

And you'll choose one option from:

  • Flood Risk Engineering Management
  • Negotiated Module

Postgraduate Diploma

  • Environmental Performance Management
  • Construction Contracts and Dispute Resolution
  • Transport and Infrastructure Engineering and Sustainable Design (double module)

Masters

  • MSc Project

MSc Construction Project Management Pathway

Masters

Independent Scholarship (Technology) - This module will provide you with an opportunity to utilise and enhance the knowledge and intellectual skills gained during your programme, by means of an extensive investigation of a proposed postgraduate study related to the course material. Dissertations, research based technical design and development projects and the exhibition of creative design artwork are viable types of independent scholarship.
