Control and Instrumentation

You can start this course in September 2011, and you can study full time or part time.

Why choose this course?

  • You'll be able to apply for Chartered Engineer status when you graduate as this course has been developed to cover all the requirements.
  • You'll be taught by experienced and supportive tutors, who will help you reach your full potential.
  • You'll develop the skills and knowledge employers are looking for in areas such as automotive, aerospace, petrochemical, scientific or manufacturing applications.

About the course

This course is flexible, so you'll have lots of choice in the specialist subject modules you take and the ways you learn. So you'll study some modules through lectures and tutorials, some online and others in your workplace. You'll study both on your own and as part of a group. And your project work will give you experience of working in teams.

You'll look at the most up to date knowledge and practice in both control and instrumentation. And you'll build up an in depth understanding of the essentials of both in the Control Systems, and Electronic Instrumentation modules. You'll then apply these principles to the latest technology in the Intelligent Instrumentation, and Digital Control Systems modules.

What you'll cover

You'll be able to combine control and instrumentation in the two optional modules. In the Embedded Systems module, you'll create integrated measurement and control systems based around tiny computers in the form of microcontrollers.

And in the Industrial Electronics module, you'll explore how instrumentation and control systems are applied in small or large scale industrial environments, in the latter taking into consideration the challenge of distributed sensing and control.

In your final module you'll apply your knowledge and skills in technology, management and research methods, to complete an in depth study of a topic that interests you.

If your undergraduate degree is not accredited by the Engineering Council as part of their requirements for the CEng, or you're unsure about studying a postgraduate course, you can do the Preparatory Programme - Preparing for Postgraduate Study in Arts, Design and Technology (Engineering) - before you start the MSc.

If you're an international student you can combine this with an appropriate English course if you need to reach the international entry requirements.
