Web Applications Development - MSc
Course content
The importance of web-based applications continues to grow, as do the number of devices to deliver these applications. On this course you will specialise in the design and development of internet-based systems, focussing on key underpinning technologies. You will examine the methods, models, tools and techniques required to build and host secure web applications, with sophisticated interfaces, using the very latest interactive technologies. In particular, you will study issues relating to the evaluation of websites, web engineering and data storage, as well as exploring the application of standards and design patterns to aid implementation of your designs.
Core modules
- E-Commerce application development
Examines the architecture, technologies and design principles which underpin e-commerce systems. Appropriate tools and development environments are used to implement a prototype e-commerce solution and evaluate open source alternatives. - Database design & implementation
Develops concepts of databases and database management systems. You will study, in detail, techniques and tools for developing and managing such systems. Particular emphasis is placed on critiquing and implementing database models. - Design patterns for web application development
You will have an opportunity to develop robust and secure web applications using advanced industry-standard software patterns and techniques. You will evaluate these technologies and critically assess their usefulness and appropriateness. - Core web software engineering
Explores current development frameworks, platforms and tools for server-side web programming to support enterprise level systems. You will evaluate and select the most appropriate solutions to a given problem. - Interaction design & evaluation
Through this module you will explore a range of interactive technologies and present a number of theoretical frameworks to support analysis and critical understanding of success or failure in interaction design.

We have a programme of guest lectures and there is involvement with industry related events. You are encouraged to engage with our external clients for your final projects. In addition, staff members are accredited to teach courses in Zend(PHP), Adobe CS3 and Linux RedHat. The course has been accredited by the British Computer Society providing exemption from the CITP Further Learning component.

Entry requirements
Applicants should have an honours degree in computing, communication systems or similar, or significant work experience (typically a minimum of three years) with relevant skills and knowledge comparable to those gained from an Honours degree.
