Mobile & Distributed Computer Networks - MSc
Course content
You will investigate the tools and techniques required to develop, maintain and secure the elements required to provide 21st century communications. In addition, you will specialise in the design, implementation and management of wired and wireless computer network systems. Integral to the award are industry-level study opportunities which will allow you to seek certification of your expertise in using tools, devices from Nortel, Network Instruments and Cisco Systems.
Core modules
- Mobile & wireless communications
Expands your knowledge in mobile communications and networking by studying wireless communications technologies and exploring different wireless networking scenarios, such as generations of mobile cellular networks and satellite telecommunications. - Wireless network administration
Develops your understanding of the theory and practices of wireless LANs. Particular emphasis will be placed on the skills needed to develop, install, configure, secure, and troubleshoot wireless LANs. - Network management
Develops your awareness of the often mission critical role which networked computer systems provide in contemporary organisations, and explores the means by which such networks can be controlled. - Voice over internet protocol (VoIP)
Covers the material needed to take the NORTEL examination for qualification as NORTEL Certified Technology Specialist (or Expert) in converging IP Networks. It is delivered by a NORTEL expert. - Information technology infrastructure
Develops the knowledge and skills required to design computer networking solutions for a range of cases; and select, connect, and configure various networking devices. The module also prepares you for the Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) certification.

Entry requirements
Applicants should have an honours degree in computing, communication systems or similar or if you have significant work experience (typically a minimum of three years) with skills and knowledge, comparable to those gained from an honours degree.
