Process Systems Engineering
Starts: Full-time starting in October , part-time starting throughout the year
Duration: 1 year full-time, up to 3 years part-time
Course overview:
The MSc course in Process Systems Engineering is accredited by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) and the Energy Institute (EI).
There are two options on the MSc in Process Systems Engineering:
- Energy Systems and Thermal Processes - this option concentrates on practical skills and techniques for designing energy-efficient systems and processes, managing energy and controlling environmental degradation cost effectively.
- Process Systems Technology - this option focuses on the techniques, practical tools and software required to design, instrument and control a process plant. A Postgraduate Diploma (PgDip) and Postgraduate Certificate (PgCert) in this discipline are also available.
This option is also accredited by the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE).
The laboratories of the Process Systems Engineering Group are well equipped with a range of process scale rigs simulating a range of industrial problems. The £0.5 million three-phase flow facility is furnished with a state-of-the-art plant management and control system for both research and teaching purposes.
The MSc will take you on to a successful technical or management career in a wide range of process industries, including oil and gas, petrochemical, chemical, energy, food and drink, water industries or a variety of career opportunities as an environmentally-aware energy specialist, with an in-depth understanding of energy and its rational use in industry.
Structure:
Each option has a series of nine taught modules (which are made up of compulsory and selected optional modules) and an extensive individual research project. The taught element of the course, which contributes 50% of the overall MSc achievement, is assessed by coursework and/or examinations. A variety of industrially relevant projects are offered to students.
Entry requirements:
1st or 2nd class UK honours degree (or its equivalent) in engineering and applied science. Other qualifications with considerable industrial experience will be considered.
English Language Requirements - Our normal minimum requirement is a TOEFL score of 580 (paper test) or 237 (computer test), essay rating 4.5 or 92 (Internet test), all skills 19 or an IELTS 6.5 with 6.0 for writing, a TOEIC overall score of 830, or a Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English grade C or Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English grade C, although a number of our programmes require higher scores.
