Offshore and Ocean Technology Programme - Subsea Engineering

Overview:

Subsea engineering focuses on the deepwater issues of oil and gas exploitation. Operations have moved from relatively shallow water to depths that now demand totally different engineering solutions. The Subsea Engineering option addresses both the hardware used subsea, such as wellheads and separators, as well as important issues such as field layout, flow assurance and installation/maintenance.

This MSc course is accredited by the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology (IMarEST) for CEng, CMarTech and MIMarEST. The MSc has also been approved by the Energy Institute (EI) for membership, and as meeting the Engineering Council UK's further learning requirements for Chartered Engineer registration under UK-SPEC.

Students on this course benefit from access to a range of facilities including tanks where equipment used for subsea engineering can be tested. 

Course Structure:

The course comprises eight one-week assessed modules, a group project, and an individual thesis project.

Modules:

Students complete six core modules with a further two optional modules selected in consultation with the Course Director. These provide the tools required for the group and individual projects.

• Offshore Inspection
• Project Management
• Safety, Risk and Reliability Offshore
• Materials in the Offshore Environment
• Subsea Oil and Gas Exploitation

Optional modules:

• Finite Element Analysis and Materials Modelling
• Failure of Materials and Structures
• Offshore Pipeline Design and Installation
• Offshore Renewable Energy - Management
• Reliability Engineering and Asset Risk Management

Entry requirements:

Candidates must possess, or be expected to achieve, a 1st or 2nd class UK Honours degree or equivalent in a relevant science, engineering or related discipline. Other relevant qualifications, together with significant experience, may be considered.

English language requirements - our normal minimum requirement is a TOEFL score of 580 (paper test) or 237 (computer test), essay rating 4.5 or 92 (Internet test), all skills 19 or an IELTS 6.5 with 6.0 for writing, a TOEIC overall score of 830, or a Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English grade C or Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English grade C, although a number of our programmes require higher scores.

Funding:

Funding opportunities exist, including industrial sponsorship, School bursaries and a number of general external schemes.  For the majority of part-time students sponsorship is organised by their employers. We recommend you discuss this with your company in the first instance.
