Cranfield University
Environmental Diagnostics and Management
Duration:
1 year full-time
2-5 years part-time
Overview:
Environmental diagnostics is the process by which we assess an environmental situation and identify and quantify relevant components. We then design or implement solutions to reduce or eliminate the problems we have determined. This requires scientific knowledge of the environment, detection and monitoring techniques, remedial processes, as well as awareness of legislative frameworks and project management tools.
The course describes most topics from the basis of the underpinning science, the relevance and appropriateness of the topics in environmental situations and examples of their implementation. As well as benefiting from specialist technical modules, students will also develop a range of academic and transferable skills.
The course is accredited by the Chartered Institution for Water and Environmental Management (CIWEM) and the Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment (IEMA).
Course Structure:
The MSc course comprises eight one-week assessed modules, a group project, and an individual design project.
The modules include lectures and tutorials and are assessed through written examinations and assignments.

- Evaluating Sustainability
- Risk, Toxicology, Exposure & Health
- Environmental Regulation in Practice
- Process Emissions and Control
- Soil Plant Environment Science
- Water Quality Monitoring
- Pollution Prevention and Remediation Technologies
A number of modules are shared with other environmental courses within the School of Applied Sciences, allowing students to engage with a wider peer group.
